Hefei General Machinery Research Institute Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as HGMI) is a central government-owned research institute restructured into an enterprise based in Anhui Province. Founded in Beijing in 1956 and relocated to Hefei in 1969, it was a Class-I national comprehensive research institute directly under the former Ministry of Machinery Industry. In 1999, it was transformed into a technology-oriented enterprise, and completed the corporate system reform in 2018. At present, it is affiliated to Sinomach Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Sinomach), a Fortune Global 500 company. HGMI currently owns 1 listed company and 19 wholly-owned, holding and managed companies, with nearly 1,500 employees, of which more than 80% are R&D personnel.

HGMI is mainly engaged in the design and development, product development, inspection and testing, equipment supervision, project contracting, complete equipment supply, and vocational education of general machinery and equipment for industries including petroleum, chemical engineering, gas, metallurgy, electric power, environmental protection, national defense and military industry. Its engineering technology R&D covers more than 20 professional fields such as pressure vessels and pipelines, refrigeration and air conditioning, compressors, fans, pumps, valves, seals, injection equipment, heat transfer technology and equipment, filtration and separation machinery, environmental protection equipment, science popularization equipment, food packaging machinery, and petroleum equipment.

HGMI is a national innovative enterprise, a national high-tech enterprise, a national model enterprise for technological innovation, a national enterprise technology center, and a model enterprise for creating world-class specialized, refined, differential and innovative enterprises approved by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC). It hosts a number of national and provincial-level R&D platforms, including the National Engineering Research Center of Pressure Vessel and Pipeline Safety, the State Key Laboratory of High-end Compressor and System Technology, the National Innovation Center for Basic Components of General Machinery, the National International Science and Technology Cooperation Base (International Joint Research Center), the Anhui Provincial Technological Innovation Center for Pressure Vessels and Pipelines, the Anhui Provincial Laboratory of Compressor Technology, and the Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Hydrogen Energy Storage and Transportation Equipment Technology. It houses 3 national quality inspection and testing centers for compressor and refrigeration equipment, pumps and valves, and sealing products. It is a public service platform for industrial technology foundation, a demonstration platform for service-oriented manufacturing, and a national public service demonstration platform for small and medium-sized enterprises recognized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology; a pilot unit for science and technology service industry approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology; a national standard verification site (pressure-bearing equipment and fluid machinery) approved by the State Administration for Market Regulation; and the chairman unit of the National Strategic Alliance for Technological Innovation in the Design, Manufacturing and Maintenance of Major Pressure-bearing Equipment in Extreme Environments.

HGMI hosts more than 20 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research and testing platforms established by Anhui Province, China Machinery Industry Federation, Sinopec and other institutions. It is the supporting entity for 1 international standardization technical committee, 10 national standardization technical committees, 4 subcommittees of national standardization technical committees, and more than 10 industrial societies and associations including the Pressure Vessel Branch and the Fluid Engineering Branch of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society. It is equipped with talent training and exchange platforms such as academician workstations, postdoctoral research stations, national demonstration bases for innovative talent training, joint postgraduate training centers, and vocational and technical colleges.

Adhering to the principle of “giving full play to Sinomach’s strengths to serve national needs” and implementing the innovation-driven development strategy, HGMI has achieved more than 3,000 scientific and technological achievements since its establishment in 1956, including 51 national science and technology awards and over 500 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. These technological achievements have been widely applied in national economic construction, achieving remarkable economic and social benefits.

As a restructured research institute, HGMI will always be guided by national strategies, industrial and market demands, focusing on two major fields:“localized R&D of major technical equipment for national key engineering construction and national defense & military industry” and“research on safety, reliability and energy-saving technologies of in-service equipment”.

Through basic applied research, the development of key generic technologies, and the transformation and application of achievements, HGMI accelerates the integration of the innovation chain and the industrial chain. It aims to build a “source of original technologies” and a “source for R&D and diffusion & transformation of key generic technologies” for general machinery. It supports more industrial enterprises to become “chain leaders” and “specialized, refined, differential and innovative” hidden champions, leads and drives the transformation and upgrading of the industry, systematically builds strategic scientific and technological strength for the general machinery industry, actively acts as the main force in the construction of new industrialization, and strives to become a world-renowned and domestically leading modern technology-oriented listed enterprise.
