Shanghai Electric Power Generation Equipment Co.,Ltd. Turbine Plant

The predecessor of Shanghai Electric Power Generation Equipment Co.,Ltd. Turbine Plant was General Machinery Co., Ltd. of the National Resources Commission of the National Government, established on March 28, 1946. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it was officially named Shanghai Turbine Works on August 30, 1953, becoming the first enterprise in China to design and manufacture steam turbines. In 1955, using technology from Czechoslovakia, the factory successfully produced China’s first 6,000 kW steam turbine, earning its reputation as “the Cradle of China’s Steam Turbine Industry”. In December 1995, it formed a Chinese-controlled joint venture with Westinghouse Corporation of the United States, establishing Shanghai Turbine Co., Ltd. In 1999, Westinghouse transferred its stake to Siemens AG of Germany, making Shanghai Turbine one of Siemens’ global partners. In 2007, it was merged into the new joint venture, Shanghai Electric Power Generation Equipment Co., Ltd. On November 15, 2014, Shanghai Electric Gas Turbine Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Ansaldo Gas Turbine Technology Co., Ltd., joint ventures established by Shanghai Electric and Ansaldo, were officially inaugurated at Shanghai Turbine Works.

By 2023, the factory had manufactured steam turbines with a total capacity of over 580 GW, with products distributed to nearly 30 countries and regions. Its products have successively filled gaps in China’s steam turbine industry and set national and world records repeatedly.

The factory is the first enterprise in China to obtain ISO 9001 quality system certification, and has also been certified for environmental management system, occupational health and safety management system, and energy management system.
