Dongfang Steam Turbine Co., Ltd. (Dongfang Electric Corporation)

Dongfang Steam Turbine Co., Ltd. of Dongfang Electric Corporation is the successor to Dongfang Steam Turbine Works. It is a subsidiary of China Dongfang Electric Corporation Limited, a high-tech state-owned enterprise specializing in the research, design, and manufacturing of large-scale power generation equipment in China. It is a designated manufacturer of main and auxiliary power machinery for large naval vessels, one of the Top 100 Machinery Industrial Enterprises in China, and one of the three major steam turbine manufacturing bases in the country. 

Company History

Founded in 1965, construction began in 1966, and it was completed and put into operation in 1974. On December 28, 2006, it was restructured into Dongfang Steam Turbine Co., Ltd. and Dongqi Investment & Development Co., Ltd., both subsidiaries of China Dongfang Electric Corporation Limited. At the end of December 2018, Dongfang Steam Turbine Co., Ltd. absorbed and merged Dongqi Investment & Development Co., Ltd., which was subsequently deregistered.

Major Milestones

May 12, 2008: The company was severely hit by the Wenchuan Earthquake, with its Hanwang factory completely destroyed. It was relocated and rebuilt in the Bajiao Industrial Park in Deyang, covering over 2,000 mu and housing 19 manufacturing centers and R&D facilities.

November 27, 2020: China’s first F-class 50MW heavy-duty gas turbine achieved full-load operation, marking that Dongfang Electric Corporation has fully mastered the independent design, manufacturing, testing, and core control technologies for gas turbines. This breakthrough filled the domestic technological gap in heavy-duty gas turbines and promoted the leapfrog development of China’s independent gas turbine industry.

2021: Guided by General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions on carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, Dongfang Steam Turbine, based on the new development stage, implementing the new development philosophy, and actively integrating into the new development pattern, formulated its 14th Five-Year Plan development strategy. It proposed a blueprint for building a first-class, progressive, and beautiful Dongqi with excellent development quality, sound political ecology, and a favorable environmental image, embarking on a new journey of high-quality development.

2022: Focusing on the essential requirement of “excellent development quality”, the company strived for excellence and achieved all its set goals. Its operating revenue, market orders, total profit, payment collection, net cash flow from production and operation, and comprehensive product output all achieved double-digit year-on-year growth, reaching the highest level in history on a comparable basis. It continued to rank first in the domestic industry and was designated as a First-Class Enterprise in Work Safety Standardization for Industrial and Trade Industries in 2022 by the Ministry of Emergency Management of the People’s Republic of China, marking a new stage in the construction of a first-class Dongqi.

March 8, 2023: China’s first F-class 50MW heavy-duty gas turbine commercial demonstration unit with fully independent intellectual property rights, which has been twice selected as one of the Top 10 “National Heavy Equipment” by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, successfully passed the 72+24-hour trial operation. All performance indicators met the standard requirements, and it was officially put into commercial operation. This provided a self-controlled, full-chain “Chinese Solution” for the clean energy sector and opened a new chapter in the high-quality development of China’s independent gas turbine industry.
